Why Consider a Couple’s Therapy Intensive?

Couples therapy Intensive

Couples therapy can sometimes feel ‘intense’ and intimidating enough, why should you consider a Couple’s Therapy Intensive? We often see couples coming to therapy to prepare for a transition (moving in together or marriage), to learn more about managing communication and conflict, to repair after a recent escalation or betrayal, to parent together more collaboratively, or to reconnect after managing other aspects of life. Whatever the reason, couples therapy is immensely helpful to rebuild safety in connection, refine communication tools and skills, and to repair past hurts.

So, what are the benefits of a Couple’s Therapy Intensive?

  1. Increase initial momentum: The first sessions of couple’s therapy are to assess your history, stuck points, and current struggles to determine a treatment plan. This assessment process can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks in traditional, weekly therapy. An Intensive affords the opportunity to work through the initial assessment, provide recommendations, and start the work in a matter of hours instead of week after week.
  2. Learn and practice the tools: There are many, many tools, tips, and skills we can provide for you to improve your emotion regulation and communication in your relationship. An Intensive will provide us the opportunity to not only teach you those tools but to also practice them with you experientially throughout the length of the intensive. It is great to learn tools, it is quite another experience to utilize the tools with your therapist in the room to refine these new approaches and receive supportive feedback.
  3. Get to the underlying issues: In hourly couples therapy it is so easy to get stuck in the most recent fight or crisis, the same cycle of avoidance, or to simply survive the hour. The goal of an Intensive is to move beyond the current content and get to the underlying issues that are impacting your connection and communication. What did you each bring into this relationship that is impacting your dynamic? What hurts have occurred that impact trust and vulnerability? What is happening under the surface that keeps you stuck? In weekly therapy we can get to these topics, however in an Intensive we have the luxury of time to thoughtfully and efficiently move into the true underlying issues to create real, lasting change.
  4. You value intentionality and efficiency: We have found that couples who attend an Intensive show up with intention- to put everything else aside, to be focused, emotionally available, and ready to do this meaningful work. Instead of squeezing couples therapy in between meetings or at the end of a long day, couples who commit to an intensive see and feel the impacts immediately in their relationship.

At FIT you will find couple’s therapists who are specifically trained on couple’s dynamics and provide warm, direct feedback to address your relationship concerns. A Couple’s Intensive is a way to access these benefits in an efficient way to immediately experience shifts in your relationship.
